Presentation March 25 at Bemis Library

Would you like to know more about your vintage hankies?

Katie and I invite you to join us on March 25 for a presentation about vintage and antique hankies.
Katie Dix, from The Story of Vintage Hankies, will be giving her Dabbers and Blowers lecture. This informative and entertaining program provides a 2,000-year account of the handkerchief and a display of hankies from the past 175 years. Participants will receive a gift of a new or vintage hanky. For more information about Katie and her programs visit: www.storyofvintagehankies.com.

I will be exhibiting a group of Hanky Dresses from my private collection. And, my new item, Hanky Cottages, will be making their debut.

For a sneak preview check out our display in the library lobby. It will be available for viewing throughout the entire month of March.

Reader Submission - Baby Booties Using Upcycled Vintage Hankies

Sue, one of my readers, contacted me after finding my Hanky Dresses online to let me know how much she liked them and that she had pinned one on her Don’t Cry Pin Board - http://pinterest.com/greenbriarsue/don-t-cry/ We started comparing notes and I found out she was a hanky lover and crafter too.

Isn’t this a sweet idea! Sue makes these cute little baby booties from upcycled vintage hankies.

These little girl's booties incorporate white ladies hankies. The special white booties on the bottom were made from a vintage hanky that had tulle lace on the edge and tiny embroidered flowers.

Both sets of the of boy's booties incorporate men’s hankies.

Here is what else Sue had to say:
I have been fascinated with hankies since I was given a box of them from a relative's estate sale. When I opened my Etsy shop, Greenbriar Creations, one and a half years ago, I began selling the bridal/heirloom quality hankies and upcycling the ones that weren't so perfect. I'm always looking for new ideas, so I was delighted to find your Hanky Dresses today.

Thanks for sharing Sue!

Valentine Cupid

Vintage Valentine Hanky Dresses
These three Hanky Dresses are from my private collection and are very dear to me.

The first one on the left is especially wonderful. Notice Cupid floating across the bodice. I was so surprised when I folded this up and Cupid appeared!

Remember the classic song "Cupid" as sung by Sam Cooke.

Cupid draw back your bow
And let your arrow go
Straight to my lover's heart for me
Cupid please hear my cry
And let your arrow fly
Straight to my lover's heart for me ...

If you would like to listen to the song, you may click on this YouTube link.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F48yOkcQWe0

The dress in the center declares the sentiment, "Forever Dear Forever".  Now picture this...it is the late 1950's ... a pretty young woman is standing in her spotless mid century pink appliance kitchen. She is wearing a cotton fitted-waist dress, high heels, and a pretty little apron. Her husband comes through the front door and shouts, "Honey I'm home!"  He waltzes on into the kitchen, slips his hands around her tiny waist and gives her a big hug from behind and a kiss on the cheek. Then he says, "Now close your eyes and hold out your hands." He reaches back around the corner to pick up the gift he hid on the way in. He places a valentine card and one long stem red rose in her hands. She opens her eyes and an adoring smile spreads across her face. He excitedly requests, "Open it, open it." Tucked inside his romantic valentine is this lovely vintage hanky which brings a tear to her eye as she reads...Forever Dear Forever. You know she tucked that hanky away in her dresser drawer along with the memory of that moment when they were both young and so in love. How romantic it would have been to receive this hanky from your husband back in the Fifties!

Now the hanky on the right is what is known as a secret fold hanky. This one would have been folded a special way to reveal a heart and flowers.

Oh, and by the way, there is also a Valentine Hanky Dress on my front door.
